Hair loss can impact a person’s self-esteem. It seemed like just yesterday when we had a full head of hair, and then all of the sudden it’s gone. It can make you feel helpless. But Dr. Perron provides hair transplantation for his patients to regain a natural-looking hairline.
What is hair transplantation?
Even if they have lost all or most of their hair on the top of their heads, most people still have functioning hair follicles at the lower back of their head. Hair transplantation procedures relocate some of these “bald resistant” hair follicles from the back of the head to the balding areas on the top of the head. Once transplanted, these follicles that have never been prone to balding naturally grow hair for decades to come.
Although hair transplantation has been performed since the 1950s, techniques for successfully transplanting hair follicles have advanced, as have their success rates. Formerly, circles of skin from the back of the scalp were excised as single units and implanted on the bald areas on the crown and hairline. But these methods led to unsatisfactory results. Plus, scarring on the back of the scalp was very noticeable.
Today, Dr. Perron uses two different grafting methods: mini-grafting and micro-grafting.
- Micro-grafting
Dr. Perron believes that for transplantation to achieve a natural-looking hairline, the hair placement has to be both precise and slightly irregular. To achieve the desired symmetry and slight asymmetry in places, Dr. Perron uses micro-grafting. He takes very fine micro-grafts from the back of the scalp consisting of just one to four hairs each. These micro-grafts are then implanted at the desired hairline.
- Mini-grafting
Micro-grafting creates very natural-looking results, but they are less voluminous. Plus, transplanting with only micro-grafts takes many hours, risking the safety of the excised donor tissue and the recently transplanted tissue. For these reasons, Dr. Perron also uses mini-grafts consisting of from five to 12 hairs in each graft. These are placed behind the micro-grafts to provide fullness.
